The Lipica Stud Farm is one of the oldest stud farms in the world and the birthplace of the Lipizzaner. The over 400 year tradition of breeding these white horses has been preserved to the present day in the centre of the unique Karst landscape and represents one of the most beautiful natural and cultural monuments of Slovenia.
Karst villages are built as clusters of houses with a square and a church in the middle. Homesteads face south and are closed on the northern side, their residential part is usually complemented by agricultural buildings built around an enclosed courtyard – borjač. The construction of houses has always adapted to natural conditions, so Karst houses used to be made entirely out of stone, from the foundation to the roof, as that is a material which is abundant in the Karst.
